Painting a Red Victory Star Destroyer
Background
I originally intended to sell this VSD, along with some Red TIEs that I recently painted. The first attempt at a paint job was pretty basic as I was very out of practice, but as you can see, this second visit has improved the look dramatically. I have since decided not to sell either the VSD or the TIEs!
I have another couple of Victorys to paint up; they’ll act as practice before I attempt to paint a Super Star Destroyer…
Blending
The photos on the right shows the top-side and the under-side of the ship.
Originally, I didn’t intend to do any blending on the under-side, but since I was very happy with the work on the top side I changed my mind.
The work on the under-side is arguably much better (sadly as it’s rarely seen!). The difference, I think, was that I used a more dilute (wetter) paint to do the blending.
Interestingly, I think I prefer the more ‘muddy’ on the top blending as it makes the miniature ‘stand-out’. It’s only when viewed close up that it doesn’t look so good.
Version 1.0
The photos to the right show the first attempt at repainting a capital ship, after 20 years of not doing any painting at all. As you can see, it’s very basic and has many flaws.
Also worth noting is that I’ve done a lot more experimentation with taking photographs of models since these photos were taken, and I’ve improved the my lighting set-up.
