Painted Mandator II Star Dreadnought for Star Wars Armada

Collaboration with Sabre Workshop

The model here is actually a mis print – i had quite a bit of work to do to assemble the 3 pieces together so that the joins were obfuscated; I partial succeeded here as some joins are good, but some are quite visible.

The best product for all the gap filling was Vallejo’s Plastic Putty.

Mandator II – A Huge Ship

Man, the  Mandator II is a huge ship. While it’s not as big as say the official FFG Super Star Destroyer, it took between 10 and 20 hours to paint, I reckon.

Shading Every Hull Panel

The most time consuming part of the project was choosing to individually glaze/shade each and every panel; I used a darker grey glaze to back-shade the back end of each panel. This gives the ship a kind of “texture”.

Decals

I was pretty pleased with the decals; yellow ink tends to be very translucent, but against the Republic light grey they look fine. Against darker colours the red and yellow might not stand out.

Varnishing Disaster

I foolishly used a new pot of varnish the the Mandator II here… which turned out to be gloss varnish!  No matter how many subsequent layers of matt varnish I applied afterwards, the model retained a shine. Doh.
