Nebulon Cruiser Commission for Star Wars Armada
My brief for this second part of the commission was to paint the ship in a neutral military grey with green markings and some weathering and battle damage.
Painting The Hull
The hull was stippled in increasingly light greys, and then dry-brushed with lighter light greys. A number of Nuln Oil washes were applied to help blend the stippling together with the dry-brushing, and then further more dry-brushing was added.
Markings
I masked-off the top side of the green lines along the hull before painting. The colours on the front were done in the same colour-style as the regular FFG Nebulon B Frigate. The green and brown were applied in thin-ish glaze-like coats over the initial dry-brushing.
I’ve found that glazzing over monochrome grey dry-bushing is a really effective way to get colour blends and nice colour gradients.)
A second set of small green markings were added to the back of the ship in a second pass since this area looked a little bare.
Weathering and Battle Damage
In hindsight, since having painted a few more ships as part of this commission project, I think I should have added more hull discolouration along the way – while the ship looks nice, sometimes weathering looks better when applied on top of a non-homogenously coloured hull. This kind-of reflects a ship being older and having more stains and wot-not.
I added small areas of paint chipping, being careful not to go crazy as sometimes less-is-more when it comes to this kind of thing. I paid special attention to breaking-up the outline of the decal and the green markings.
Final Thoughts
I was very pleased with the outcome on this Nebulon Cruiser, If there was one thing I’d change it’s adding some object source lighting around the crew lights. I think this is most necessary on the to bridge area where the bright yellow lights don’t really feel right, imo.
